WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN Arabica & Robusta

Arabica (coffea arabica)
Arabica coffee is characterized by its sweetness and acidity, its fruity and zesty flavours and intense aroma. It has a light to medium body and a soft mouthfeel. It contains on average about half of the caffeine of Robusta.

Robusta (coffea canephora)
Robusta coffee is characterised by its woody and earthy flavours. It has lower acidity and a heavier mouthfeel. It is traditionally blended with Arabica beans to achieve excellent body in an espresso.

Arabica coffee is used predominately in blended coffee because of its properties of sweetness, acidity and fruit/citrus driven flavours. It generally has a lighter ‘body’, a term that combines the elements of total dissolved solids and subjective mouthfeel. Robusta coffee generally has less sweetness and a woody, earthy character with a heavy body.

You will not likely see a 100% Robusta blends as Robusta is a very strong bean, too strong to drink straight. There are however, some high quality Robusta beans that provide some great flavours and pair up with Arabica blends perfectly.

how much CAFFEINE does coffee have?

Often people will have espresso to give them an energy boost, believing that it is the best source of caffeine. Whilst this is somewhat true, espresso isn’t the biggest source of caffeine. The average 30ml of espresso has 60-80milligrams of caffeine, while a brewed cup such as a plunger or drip filter may contain 80-150 milligrams.

What origin produces the best coffee?

This is an unanswerable question. Great coffee comes from every origin around the world. The decision on the best coffee is really up to you. Whilst there are some expensive coffees in the world, these are not always an indication of flavour, maybe just a distinct quality and often a limited supply. Like any commodity, under supply = over demand which then brings a higher price.

what is a single origin?

The coffee industry internationally refers to coffee countries as origins. Well known coffee origins are Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia. A single origin beans is one that has only one origin in it and may be from a specific part of that origin.
